Can Trees contribute to climate amelioration?

The year 2021-22 will go down in the books of history as the post-COVID year. Though many strains of the novel corona virus remain among the population we have adapted and evolved biologically. The war is not won but mankind fought together to win battles against COVID. The year has also borne witness to some dramatic climatic events across the world. Many places across the world have recorded some of the highest temperatures and most erratic precipitation patterns ever recorded in history of those places. This long term shift in temperature and weather pattern is known as climate change. Let me start with my journey of understanding climate change. Working as a system engineer after my bachelor, climate change came in as part of my general awareness. If I remember correctly the brief understanding included that the earth was getting warmer (process known as global warming), and humans had to keep the temperature below 2 0 C rise in global average temperature to the pre-industrial er...

Economy for employability in the aftermath of corona

Before I start a humble request to everyone reading it, please maintain the social distancing and abide by the lockdown measures. We are seeing the best of mankind coming together, let us everyone contribute by breaking the chain of spread.   On 22nd of March 2020, India was brought to a standstill on appeal of our honorable Prime Minister to observe Janta curfew in a battle against the invisible enemy COVID 19 or more popularly known as coronavirus but, the battle had just begun for us. China reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) of a cluster of pneumonia patients in Wuhan on 31st December 2019. As the number of infected increased exponentially over the next two weeks Chinese authorities took to putting a lockdown on Wuhan starting 23rd of January 2020 to contain the spread of the virus. Evidently, the lockdown was no soon enough to contain as patients in Italy started to show similar symptoms by the end of January. As the coronavirus made it's spread the policymake...

EDC: conservation or development?

As part of the course curriculum in post graduate diploma in forestry management at the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) I have been travelling to different protected areas in and around Madhya Pradesh for past two years. Besides, I had worked around a few protected areas in Assam during my summer internship. The process involved interacting with different stakeholders in the conservation process like the forest department, local communities, various institutions etc. It gave me an exposure to different forest management aspects. One of the institutions that I frequently interacted was eco development committees (EDC). During my interactions with some of the EDCs I came across a few interesting observations; these committees had funds allocated for different activities, people were ready to work under the committee program, an organizational structure was present still most of these committees were near defunct with very little operations. I pondered if everyt...

Assam Tea Corporation – the way ahead

Government organizations that compromise between profit and greater social good may end up having a halfway house.  When such problems are inherent in the mission and vision of an organization it would be difficult for an organization to survive. Assam Tea Corporation (ATC) might be necessitated to ponder over their strategic decision making process if the organization wishes to revive itself and work to the fullest of its potential. They would be faced with a similar dilemma in doing so.   Assam Tea Corporation was established in 1972 with the objective of protecting the biggest industry in Assam. Assam Tea Corporation was started under gloomy conditions during the 1960s and 1970s after the introduction of Foreign Exchange Regulation Act compelling the foreign tea companies to dilute their shareholder in tea companies in India. It was opened with the objectives of carrying out business of tea, protect and control the tea industry and the interest of the many people ass...
